Uggah: Bebuling STOLport on track for June completion, only minor works left

KUCHING (May 12): The RM248 million Bebuling short take-off and landing airport (STOLport) project in Spaoh, Betong is nearing completion and expected to be fully completed by June, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The Bukit Saban assemblyman said the progress of the project demonstrated the Gabungan Parti Sarawak government鈥檚 commitment to implementing development plans and delivering on promises made to the people.

鈥淲hen a project is announced by the Sarawak Premier, it is not just a promise but will be made a reality for the rakyat鈥檚 benefit,鈥 he said, according to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit report.

He said this during a working visit to the STOLport site on Sunday to inspect the latest progress and receive a briefing on the remaining works.

Uggah, who is Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, said he was satisfied with the overall progress of the project, which only had minor works remaining before full completion.

He added that once construction is completed, the facility would still have to undergo several technical procedures, including flight testing, to ensure it is fully operational and safe for use.

He expressed confidence that the STOLport would spur further growth in Spaoh and Betong, particularly in terms of connectivity, economic activities, tourism and investment opportunities.

On another development project, Uggah said the construction of a covered pedestrian bridge at SK Nanga Gayau is expected to be fully completed by September this year.

He said the project is one of the key initiatives under the Betong Division Development Agency, which allocated RM2.38 million in funding.

鈥淭he construction of this pedestrian bridge is a critical step in ensuring the safety of pupils and the local community, who are exposed to high traffic risks along the Pan Borneo Highway,鈥 he said.

He said the main scope of work involves the construction of a new pedestrian bridge structure measuring approximately 36.4 metres in length and 5.7 metres in height, specially designed for the convenience of pupils and the school community.

Meanwhile, at a separate event also on Sunday, Uggah said Bukit Sadok is set to be transformed into a new tourism landmark in Betong Division through a comprehensive development plan that will include longhouses and various visitor facilities.

He said the proposed initiative would enhance the appeal of Bukit Sadok, an area already rich in Iban history and heritage.

鈥淭he core vision of the project is to position Bukit Sadok as a premier tourism destination in Betong while invigorating the local economy.

鈥淎s such, proper planning is crucial to ensure the development is able to attract visitors and deliver tangible benefits to the local community,鈥 he said when officiating at the flag-off ceremony of the 2026 Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak Bukit Sadok Expedition.

He pointed out that Bukit Sadok is not merely a hill, but a site of great historical importance as it once served as the stronghold of legendary Iban warrior Rentap during his resistance against the Brooke administration.

In this regard, he described the construction of a replica of Rentap鈥檚 fortress in the area as an important step to preserve Sarawak鈥檚 history and heritage for future generations.

At the same time, Uggah voiced support for initiatives aimed at appreciating and exploring the state鈥檚 natural resources in line with sustainable development efforts.

鈥淲e should continue exploring our forests so that we remain connected to nature in support of sustainable development initiatives,鈥 he said.

He also hoped the expedition participants would provide constructive feedback that could help identify development opportunities and areas for improvement in future tourism activities in Betong.
