Australian Scramjet-Powered Vehicle Makes First Hypersonic Test Flight

An Australian-made hypersonic vehicle completed its first flight late on Feb. 27, propelled to Mach 5-plus speeds by a Rocket Lab HASTE rocket from Wallops Island, Virginia.

The scramjet-powered, 3.5-m.-long (11.5 ft) Dart AE vehicle executed a hypersonic mission and gathered technical data, which is still being analyzed, Brisbane-based Hypersonix Launch System said in a statement.

The company did not offer any details about the performance of the Spartan scramjet propulsion system, but confirmed that engine operation was among the items evaluated during the test.

鈥淭his mission allowed us to test propulsion, materials and control systems in real hypersonic conditions,鈥 Michael Smart, Hypersonix co-founder, said in the release.

The U.S. Defense Innovation Unit supported the flight as part of the hypersonic and high-cadence testing capabilities (HyCAT) project.

The test flight鈥攄ubbed the 鈥淭hat鈥檚 Not a Knife鈥 mission鈥攎arked the second HyCAT-sponsored test flight in about three months and the fourth test by the HASTE rocket in six months, according to Rocket Lab.
