KUCHING (Jan 27): Sarawak is positioning itself as Southeast Asia’s emerging aerospace powerhouse through the Asia Pacific Aerospace Conference and Exhibition (Apace) 2026, connecting global aerospace and aviation stakeholders with opportunities across the Asia-Pacific region.

In his welcoming remarks, organiser and former Royal ÿ�մ���n Air Force General, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Affendi Buang, said Sarawak’s strategic location near the equator and at the heart of Asean offers unique advantages for the state to play a pivotal role in the region’s rapidly expanding aerospace and aviation ecosystem.

He highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to move up the value chain through investments in aerospace manufacturing, advanced systems, space-related technologies, and the establishment of AirBorneo.

“Sarawak aspires not merely to be a user of aerospace technology but a meaningful contributor to the regional supply chain,” he said, stressing that the state aims to produce high-value aerospace capability rather than relying solely on imported technology.

Affendi also emphasised the importance of developing local talent to support the sector’s growth.

“Our goal is to develop a sustainable aerospace ecosystem where innovation, industry and education work hand in hand,” he said, noting initiatives such as structured education pathways, targeted skills training, and industry-academia collaboration.

The three-day event is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates, 3,000 visitors, over 100 exhibitors and 60 speakers, providing a platform for knowledge exchange, technological demonstrations, and high-impact networking.

Key pillars of the programme include space technology, aviation growth, sustainable and green aviation, digital aerospace, aerotropolis development, and talent development initiatives.

Affendi acknowledged the strong support of the Sarawak government, supporting ministries and agencies, strategic partners, exhibitors, sponsors, speakers, and the organising team, noting that collaboration is central to advancing the state’s aerospace ambitions.

“This conference reflects what can be achieved when government, industry and community collaborate toward a shared vision,” he said.

Sarawak’s hosting of Apace 2026 is part of a broader push to strengthen its position as a regional aerospace hub, with strategic investments in space-related technologies, aeronautical infrastructure, and initiatives like AirBorneo aimed at building capability, resilience and self-reliance in managing the state’s airspace.

“The vision is clear — to create an ecosystem where Sarawak contributes meaningfully to both regional supply chains and the global aerospace community,” said Affendi.

The Apace 2026 was opened by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here.
